The mission of Laboratory Retrievers, LLC, is to promote global companion animal health by enhancing the clinical pathology educational opportunities available to each participant in the companion animal health ecosystem.  Our goal is to partner with key stakeholders to create novel dynamic and continuously evolving digital and hands-on resources that will improve laboratory diagnostic skills and analytics, and suggest new and emerging applications of clinical applications of clinical laboratory medicine in companion animal practice.  The availability of such resources has the potential to raise the standard of companion animal medicine for our pets and their owners.

Alan H. Rebar, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. Rebar received both his DVM and Ph.D. from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1973 and 1975, respectively.  He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He served as a Veterinary Clinical Pathology faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (later Comparative Pathobiology) at Purdue for 40 years. From 1977 through 1979 he served as an experimental pathologist at the Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  In addition to his faculty status while at Purdue, Dr. Rebar was Head of the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (1993-1996), Associate Dean for Research (1989-1996), Dean (1996-2005) and Senior Associate Vice President for Research and Executive Director of Discovery Park (2005-2015).  From 2015 through 2018, he was the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at North Carolina State University.  His professional activities have included president of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Editor of the Veterinary Clinical Pathology journal and Co-Editor of Toxicologic Pathology. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association.  Dr. Rebar has authored or co-authored 11 books/monographs, 23 textbook chapters and over 100 scientific articles in diagnostic cytology, hematology, clinical biochemistry and inhalation toxicology.  He is an internationally recognized expert in veterinary clinical pathology and has presented over 270 invited lectures nationally and internationally.  He has received many awards and recognitions from multiple agencies and in 2015, Dr. Rebar received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology. In 2020, he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology.

Dennis D. DeNicola, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dr. DeNicola received both his DVM and Ph.D. from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978 and 1981, respectively. He was a faculty member of Purdue for 21 years and as a full professor, he directed the teaching hospital clinical pathology laboratory and was the primary clinical pathology educator for veterinary students, interns, and residents. He has been an invited speaker at over 500 national and international education symposia and has authored or co-authored over 150 refereed manuscripts, textbook chapters, monographs, and textbooks. During his tenure at Purdue, he received multiple teaching and service awards, as well as the honor of being chosen for the Distinguished Alumnus award. In 2002, he joined IDEXX as Chief Veterinary Educator, where he supported both IDEXX education and research and development activities. At the 2017 ASVCP/ACVP meeting, he received the ASVCP Lifetime Achievement Award in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. In May 2021, he retired from IDEXX and now serves as an independent pathology consultant associated with Laboratory Retrievers, LLC.

Fred Metzger DVM

Fred Metzger DVM, MRCVS, DABVP

Fred Metzger DVM, MRCVS, Diplomate ABVP

Dr. Fred Metzger is a 1986 graduate of the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is an adjunct professor at Pennsylvania State University and coauthored Clinical Pathology Interpretation in Geriatric Veterinary Patients and A Guide to Hematology in Dogs and Cats.

Dr. Metzger received the Outstanding Alumni award from Penn State University in 2016, and he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022.

Dr. Metzger is the medical director of the VCA Metzger Animal Hospital, a thirteen-doctor, 94 team member, AAHA certified general, referral and 24-hour emergency hospital in State College, Pennsylvania.

In October 2022 Dr. Metzger formed Laboratory Retrievers, LLC, a clinical pathology education and advisory company with his mentors Dr. Dennis DeNicola and Dr. Alan Rebar.
